Willard Wigan is a record-breaking micro-sculptor from Birmingham.

This film, made by BAFTA winning director Kenny Scott took us inside Willard’s wonderful and surreal world. A world where he painstakingly hand-crafts microscopic artworks from tiny fragments virtually invisible to the naked eye. Some of his creations can only be seen through a microscope, and his tools are hand-made from insect claws and human eyelashes.

In this film, we followed Willard as attempted to break his own world record and produce a breath-taking sculpture that would fit inside one of his own body cells. We also delved into his life and background in a bid to understand what drives this artist to go smaller and smaller.

A magical film

The GuardianPick of the Day

An artful film that was big on the wow factor…. Watching Willard Wigan struggle to control his movements gave the film an unexpected tension. He had me holding my breath as he battled the tyrannical force of static electricity. This portrait of an extraordinary artist was television with a true sense of wonder.

The TelegraphPick of the Day

The documentary was at its best when we simply watched him work. It’s rare for a TV biography of an artist to be so moving.

The Daily MailPick of the Day

The only way to view his works is through a microscope and when people do so their first word is always ‘wow’. This documentary pays tribute to Wigan’s staggering craft….it’s all the more impressive when we learn the obstacles Wigan overcame.
